: Hello..I'm looking to major in some field of music when I go to college. I don't know if it's a great decision on my behalf, but I couldn't see it any other way. I'm really not sure what I'd do with it..but that's not the point...do any of you guys have any idea on what schools have a great music program?
What kind of music? If you are wanting a good jazz program there are a bunch of good schools... if you are more classically oriented, there is a bunch of schools for that. If you are interested in Music Ed, there are good schools for that.
My son, who is 20 is a Junior at University of Georgia. He is an incredible bassist/guitarist/drummer. He studied Jazz with a local teacher who is phenominal as a player and as a teacher for almost two years. But he really feels he needs more of a classical foundation, so he is attending UGA as a music performance major and studying with an incredible classical guitar player. Matt (my son) is an unusually mature young man in that he looks at the big picture. His first love is bass guitar and he is incredible. But he looks at what he will gain from becoming proficient at classical guitar and even though he is a metal-head and his musical first love is stuff by Rush and the like, he believes (and I agree) that his overall value as a musician can only be increased by widening his horizons.
So - ask yourself what it is EXACTLY you want to learn in college about music. Then decide where to go.
What is it exactly about music that makes you truly excited? Start there in your decision making process.
Hope that helps a little.
