Ibanez basses seem to be a very good value for the money. I have 2 Ibanez 5-strings. One is a fairly recent higher-end Sound Gear Model (1205) and the other is a 14 year old Roadstar II (885). The necks on most Ibanez basses tend to be thin and the string spacing is usually closer than on a Fender, for example. I would recommend an Ibanez especially for someone with fairly small hands or even someone who is primarily a guitarist and used to a thinner neck. however, because of the close string spacing, slapping is a bit more tricky. If you play traditional fingerstyle almost exclusively (like I do), that should not be a problem. Both of my basses, and most Ibanez basses I have played, seemed to be well made and sufficiently rugged. Both were purchased used and, while I don't know how the prior owners treated them, seem to have come through it without any significant wear or damage.
