: : : Hey,
: : : I need help in choosing a PA system for a small folk group consisting of drums,
: : : bass, guitar, mandolin, accordiionist, two vocalait (mandolin/accordion player,
: : : and guitat player do vocal duties)..
: : : We currently play indoors and outdoors with aduience sizes up to 200 people
: : : (excluding larger festivals which have thioer own PA system)..
: : : My budget is under a thousand dollars...what would the best possible set-up be
: : : that I could get...if miking an electric or acoustic bass, what would the best
: : : size speaker be for the system (could i get away with a 12")?
: : Hi Greg....Check out the Carvin catalog, you could probably set yourself
: : up with a nice PA for around that figure, I have a 6 channel Carvin
: : PA head with 300 watts, it was about $350 as I recall, plenty of
: : power...If you're gonna mike the bass, I would go with 15 inch
: : PA cabs, though...And I think Carvin has some 2 way 15's for about
: : $300 each.
: : Cheers,

: I am looking for PA speakers for a band consisiting of a guitar, bass (me), keyboards, drums and singer. We have a Mackie board (24x4), Crest 900 watt amp, and other rack items as eq, reverb, etc. I was looking at the Carvin speakers on the net and am contemplating making a trip to San Diego (I'm in Phoenix)just to look at their PA stuff. Am I wasting my time? Other than your small setup, do you know of anyone else who has any experience with their PA equipment including speakers? I've also checked out Fender (they are making PA cabinets), Electro Voice, and last but not least, JBL. Any other suggestions?
I have yet to have a bad experience with a Carvin cab. they are well made, sound good, and have (close to) unbeatable prices. The higher end of their line are better than the low end...(not just price wise, quality goes up quicker than price). I've only had a chance to work with the Fender Passport systems (Good all-in-one, but could be better). I have to highly reccommend Electro-Voice equipment...the Eliminator cabs are such an amazing system...the 15" 2-way on top of the sub is so powerful, it blew me away, and I've always found EV's to be totally roadworthy. The Force cabs are just as good. And JBL's...what can you say...always were and still are top rate gear. That's my two cents.
