: Hi Again, Bass Gurus...

: I have a question about practicing scales. I've been working on memorizing the fingerboard. I'm doing pretty well so far - I have the major scales in the basic fingering position, and down the neck - so I have almost all the natural notes on the fingerboard. I'm just using the basic fingering for major scales (2,4 - 1, 2, 4 - 1, 3, 4).

: I've got two people who are advising/coaching me as I learn the basics. One showed me 5 more ways to finger the major scales and suggested I learn these before moving on to learning the Modes. The other said, nah - just go ahead and learn the Modes now, using the basic fingering, then shift and learn a couple fingering variations and integrate those later.

: What do you guys think would be the best approach?

: Thanks for all your helpful advice.

Hi,

personally I think you should dump learning and practicing scales and instead practice triads, arpeggios and the chordal scale. Get to know where those notes are. But this is just my opinion.
