Slapping is not a style; it's a tool, just like tapping and harmonics.
As any bass player matures they will inevitably realize that monster chops isn't everything. A bass player who pretty much exclusively slaps will obviously have little chance of producing great music, just boring, wanky percussion.
Slapping doesn't take away from your own uniqueness, it adds to it if used sparingly. If you develop the instinct for a well placed slap note or two it contributes to *your* sound, and makes you more recognizable.

Don't play for playing's sake, play for music's sake. If the music needs some slapping, then do it. If it needs a simple walking line, do that.
