: I'm looking for recommendations for books/videos on building walking bass lines. Not just a collection of canned lines, but material that provides the TOOLS to create original bass lines on the fly.
: I'm basically looking to build a foundation for playing in jazz and funk bands. The Carol Kay books/videos sound good, but I don't know where to start and would like some guidance.
I can recommend "Building Walking Bass Lines" by Ed Friedland. Itīs available from Music Dispatch (www.musicdispatch.com) and Bass Books (www.bassbooks.com). It starts out at a very basic level (root, root, root, root, then root, fifth, root fifth!) and builds up from there, to some complicated stuff at the end, always concentrating on building jazz-style walking bass lines. You will also learn to read music, since there are no tabs (if I remember correctly). It comes with a recording (mine was a cassette, but they probably provide a CD nowdays). There is also a sequel, "Expanding Walking Bass Lines" by the same author -- I donīt know about his one, but it is probably also good. Anything from Carol Kaye is going to be excellent as well.
