I'd recommend you to check out the bassists who plays the songs you're gonna play in your band, and find out if they are using fingers or a pick. It makes for completely (well, quite then) different sounds depending on the song. To generalize a bit, funk bassist's often tend to play finger style, while most rock bassist's (from the 90's, what I know of) I've seen seems to prefer a pick. I don't have any idea how your band sounds, but I think you should ask the guitar guy why he thinks you should use a pick. Many guitar players often has no clue what bass playing is about, but I think there is as many of them, guys who has played with a few, who actually knows something about what different playing styles makes to a band's general sound, just as any good musician. So I'd say ask him why he'd like you to use it, if he has a valid point, then go for it.

: hiya, im new to bass, and i wonder what is the best thing to leran for beginners, finger style or using a pick. im gonna play a funk/rock band with some friends, and the gitarrist says its better i play with pick but i think its difficult when im jumping between strings, is this something that comes with time, or should i dump picking, i really need help thanx n cya
