Steve,
The reason the 4x10 sounds so good versus the 12" is the surface area of speaker cone.
You've got 12" in the Workingman & 40" in the 4x10. I had this problem with a 15"
combo I had, and traded it in for a Peavey Firebass head & two bottoms....a 210TXF &
a 412TXF. For most bar gigs I only use the 2x10 and its a BIG difference from the old
15" combo. For outdoor gigs I add the 4x12 and the lowered impedance on the head
raises the wattage to 700! That's 68" of bass thumping cone area pumped out at 700 WATTS baby!
Ok, I digress.....Buy the 4x10...you'll never regret it!
