: I play a Stingray 5 and next week I have a jam with some guitarist down tuned to "C". So normally I'de just down tune but hey we're talking four semi tones here! I've taken the B string down to G# before but the sound was really starting to lose it and this will take it down to G! Also I don't want the strings that loose that they wrap around my wrist and tear my arm off. Would it be practicai to up tune the B a semi tone to C? What do you guys do when the guitarist goes real low and plays alot of open strings(I don't want to have to keep going back to a closed note continually) Any thoughts or comments? thank you.
if he tunes down two steps to C you will still be playing in a lower register - don't tune your bass down as the bottom string will flap about uselessly. play as you are and adjust to position - you'll still be 'contra-bass' in relative terms. Of course, you could always find another guitar player...
(i have played bass and de-tuned guitar like you're suggesting and find the bass works fine as it is - go for it!)
