: I play a Stingray 5 and next week I have a jam with some guitarist down tuned to "C". So normally I'de just down tune but hey we're talking four semi tones here! I've taken the B string down to G# before but the sound was really starting to lose it and this will take it down to G! Also I don't want the strings that loose that they wrap around my wrist and tear my arm off. Would it be practicai to up tune the B a semi tone to C? What do you guys do when the guitarist goes real low and plays alot of open strings(I don't want to have to keep going back to a closed note continually) Any thoughts or comments? thank you.
You won't tune up if you want to keep that Stingray 5 for very long. Tuning a string up (especially a massive string like the low B) seriously strains the neck of your bass in strange ways. This can warp the neck and ruin your bass.
