: Hi! I'm new to this board. I'm just beginning to play bass and I have a few questions. I hope I don't sound too dumb, don't really know much about electric bass yet. So here goes:
: 1)What are common effects/pedals that are used with the bass? What are the good brands which are inexpensive and don't fall apart?
: 2)What is slapping?
: 3)Are there any tips/tricks I should know while I'm learning to play.
Welcome...some good effects for the bass are Compression(not too much). Compression gives the bass more punch. It also limits and enhances the peaks and valleys of ones playing style. Chorus is nice for bass, so is Flange. Delay can also be used. Basically, any effect your heart desires can be used. Then, you decide if you like it or not. Some recomendations are the Boss Compression/sustainer CS-3, The MXR Phase 90 is a great phase pedal, one knob and thats it, but it sounds great. If you really have some extra money around, the SansAmp Bass Driver would be a great investment. It's a direct box and an overdrive that sounds like a tube amp. Some effects are specifically designed to handle the bass frequency better, but any effect can be used. Its all about exploring, dont let yourself be cornered into something just because it says "Bass Effect". Anything that YOU like is O.K.! enjoy....peace.....john
