: : : I've had to remove the strings many times in the last week for different reasons (truss rod, electrical short, broken PU) and the Cotton? binding on the ends of two strings has come of leaving the winding at the end of the string exposed. Where it's exposed dose actually wrap around the winding post and I've noticed that when I tune these strings there's like a creaking sound and feel in the machine head. Is this a problem? ie will the winding gouge-damage the winding posts or something else? Thank You.

: : Some strings come without the cotton on the end..its nothing to worry about.....however, the creaking? Are your strings wound from the top of the post down with no overlapping? Also..how easy are your tuners to turn..the tightness can be adjusted..make sure they can turn feely with only a little friction. (check your owners manual or the web sight of your bass to find out how if you are not already familiar with how to do that) And on the other hand if they are too loose you may be getting some binding as the string tension is pulling the post out of true. well thats all i can think of....peace... john

: Thank You Datsgor for your excellent advice!!

You're very welcome...peace...john
