: Hi all, I have no problems creating jazz and blues bass lines. But when it comes to funk lines, I have problems choosing which note to slap or which notes to pop. Help! And can anyone give me a guideline on creating a good and solid funk basslines? Thank You.

Hey there,
Kenny has spoken the truth here: thumpin' with your thumb does not a funky bass line make. You don't necessarily need to slap to "give up da funk". One of the funkiest bassists around, Michael Balzary (a.k.a. Flea) has understood this when he walked into the studio to record "BloodSugarSexMagic", and when he gave his thumb some rest, some of his funkiest bass lines were born.
However, if you still want to funk up a storm with your thumb, I'll agree with Kenny once again and recommend going back to the sources: check out some of Larry Graham's older stuff with Sly & the Family Stone ...that's where everything started!!
Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
