: I know that there are different types of basses out there like jazz and precision basses, but which is best for me? I'm looking to play what ever type of bass that any old garage band would have in it. Would a P bass be the kind that I want? Hopefully someone out there knows and would be able to help me out, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks.
Before making that decision (what kind of bass/4 or 5 string, etc.) take a minute to evaluate the kind of music you'd like to play and the role you should fulfill within that context.
Some kind of instruments might seem more appropiate for certain kinds of music (i.e., if you want to play classic Motown/Stax stuff, go the P-way; if you like jazz-fusion with a razor-sharp edge, a fretless J might be what you need), but ultimately it all comes down to what sounds good to YOU. So investigate which kind of instrument play the bassists you like in the music genre you'd like to play, listen with open ears and, most important, try any bass you can get your hands on and evaluate if its sound fits the needs of the music you're interested in. And don't forget to bring the comfort factor into the picture, too: it won't make much sense to pick a bass that might sound good but is uncomfortable to hold and/or play.
Hope this helped. Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,
