: why in the hell do bassists who use a pick get so much disrespect? this "fingerstyle snobbery" pisses me off. just because we play with a pick means we're not as talented as someone who prefers their fingers?! what kind of nonsense is that?

: look, not every damn bassist in the world is into slap/pop and funk bass! in fact, some of us HATE that sound and technique

: I use a pick because it feels so right and natural to me and I love that the percussive piano-like tone that I get. Nothing can cut through a wall of Mesa/Boogie-fueled guitars like a heavily picked bass. (I play a B.C. Rich Custom Shop Warlock with EMG active bass humbuckers through an Ampeg SVT Classic head pushing Ampeg 8x10 and 2x15 cabs)

: okay I feel better now
: just my 1/2 cent

finger picking isn't only for funk or slapping.....finger picking can effectively be used for any type of music...unlike picking......but I won't argue the pros and cons of either. However, I may be able to shed some light on us finger style players, or at least myself. So , we have the bass "guitar" ......and lets not make any mistake.....it is a "guitar". Finger picking helps thicken the dividing line between the guitar playing and bass playing. It changes the approach and technique of using the instrument. I will even go as far to say that it will even effect what is actually played. (for better or worse depending on your taste) I don't have a "snobbish" attitiude towards picking, I just hate the sound of it. (much like your feeling for finger picking) Using a pick simply goes against the grain of what I was taught and the context in which I was taught. As a student of the instrument, everything I was taught was centered around the bass as a bass.....not as a guitar. Things like, Mingus .......Parker.......Jaco.....Bach......Davis.....Brown.....all lend themselves to finger style playing. Had I been brought up through a window of more guitar oriented music that would make picking needed........I would probably feel more like you. In the grand scheme of things........I've never used a pick!!! And maybe one day someone will want me to.......and I won't even know where to start..........my problem I guess. So, don't blame me for feeeling the way I do about picks and I won't blame you for feeling the way you do about finger picking.........I think the best situation would be as stated in the other post.......learn to use both. peace and hope this helped ........remember this just how I see it.........no flaming intended
