I have played bass for nearly 10 years and in that time, I have tried many different 1)brands, 2)styles, and 3)price-ranges of bass. Funny as it sounds, I've come full circle. My first bass was an American made Squier (Fender) P-bass. It was an awesome bass but I didn't take good care of it. After it, in effect, died, I went on to play everything from Peavey to Pedulla, Warwick to Ken Smith--all great basses, mind you--but I have recently sold all my other basses and bought a fleet of American made Fenders. In my honest opinion, you can't beat a Fender for good solid sound, construction, and affordability. If you're willing to spend in the $300-500 range, you can get a marvelous American-made P-bass or (my personal favorite) a good Jazz bass. This would be my recommendation. This is, however, only my opinion and, as has been stated previously, the final decision should be yours. But, speaking from experience, whatever you get, make sure to learn and practice extremely good maintenance and care for your instrument!
Hope this helps.
