The four string bass is a good place for you to begin. Once you have a good working knowledge of playing bass guitar, you can start looking at other facets of the bass. A five string bass gives you five additional notes lower (down to B) than the lowest tone available on a four string (E) and offers more versatility with what can be played in a given position on the neck. Three octaves of a note can be played with very little change in postion of the hand on the neck of a five string while only two octaves of a note can be played on the neck of a four string before changing the fretting hand's postion to reach the third octave.
Hope this helps you as its very basic. Welcome to the world of bass guitar. We put the groove in music!
