Flatwounds will give you a deeper smoother sound and are not just for fretless basses. I have been playing for only a little over a year, but I have read alot about strings, and it seems there are trends and fads in bass strings like in anything else. For a while the brighter sound of roundwounds will be all the rage, then the "coolness factor" will shift and flats will be in again. I have decided to use groundwounds (GHS Brite Flats) most of the time. A deeper and smoother tone (and less finger noise), but still bright enough for most purposes.
