: what's the difference between flatwound and roundwound strings?
: when is either one appropriate to use?
: I just started playing bass and like those really smooth low types of tones, not that hard bright metallic sound. a guitarist told me flatwound strings would give me that type of tone. any truth to this?
: another guitarist told me flatwound strings are only for fretless basses and they would eat up and destroy the frets on my bass.
: help! :)
: thanks a lot
Flats do not eat up your fret board, infact, they put less wear and tear on your board than round wounds. Strings are purely a matter of taste. When you find a sound that is right for your ears............you will more than likely stick with that string forever............lol. Flats do give a deeper/warmer sound, so much sometimes that you may find yourself adjusting the high end on your amp or bass........I use flats on my fretless and enjoy the distinct voice they provide.........kenny
