Here's one method that a majority of classical guitar players use and it works just as well for bassists. Of course, you will have to lighten your attack if it is very forceful, but many classical guitarists grow their picking hand fingernails out slightly so that as their fingers strike the strings, the nail lightly catches it causes a slight percussive sound. As I said before, this will require that a heavy-fingered player use care at first not to strike too hard as this can be painful if the nail catches. Keep in mind that the nail needn't be very very long to acheive this result--only about 1/8" of overgrowth. I have tried this before and know from experience that if the slightly percussive sound is what you seek, this will do it--personally I like a meaty sounding attack.
