: Hi all, I played guitar for 5 years, learnt tab and played a lot of chords, I moved to 4 string bass 3 years ago and have enjoyed success with it, mainly playing jazz, funk dance styles, in bands and jammimng with friends a lot. I recently went out to buy a new bass and ended up buying a 4 string fretless ? ? ? - it is a beauty of an instrument, only problem is I either slide and it sounds great, or I play all the old bass lines and it sounds like a normal bass, I need a few pointers as to how to begin on this new instrument, I have had it 2 days and need HELP! ! ! How do I approach a 4string fretless bass guitar? ? ?

Hi Aaron,
So, you bought a fretless..........I bought one last year and have been enjoying it very much. There are many approaches to any instrument and I'm glad to hear that you instinctively look for more from your fretless bass. There is more there or at least something different,as compared to a fretted. I have found that you can play and attack a fretless in many ways. Some sound very similar to fretted sounds (but cleaner) and others are more specific to the fretless. With less attack on the strings and a little more volume you will begin to hear the rich distinct tone of a fretless. I would highly suggest picking up a few Jaco Pastorious Cd's and listen to some of the finest fretless playing around. Hope this helped a little...........
