: Hey guys, need your help agian. I am realy into the funk bass thing. i like the good old james brown and good modern funk. I am getting better at my slap bass(almost have vic's style under control!!!) But I only come up with just simple octave bass line with the occasional 7th in there. just the basic funk. I would erealy like to know some more funk things like how to construct good solid funk bass lines and good funky modes. if you guy know any horn harmony for funk that would help to. i used to play tenor sax so i know a little of whats going on but i need some help. Thanx for your help.

Hey there Brew,
There's this funk tip I picked up from some of Flea's lines in "Blood sugar sex magic". In some tunes, Flea plays minor thirds over dominant 7th chords. When you think about it, it doesn't seem to work -those minor thirds would clash against the major 3rds of 7th chords. But Flea throws minor thirds anyway, thus creating Dorian (minor) lines beneath 7th chords (which have a major flavor to them), and it sounds mighty cool. Give it a listen. And don't hesitate to apply this concept to your slap lines as well.
Just my $0.02. Buena suerte and keep all of your basses way up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
