I have a guitar background, but I think I've always had a bass players soul. I recently got back into playing bass and a couple of days ago bought a fretless MIM Jazz. I love it, it feel so right. I have a few questions for the experienced people out there though.

1. Strings It came with flatwounds. What about roundwounds? Of course, Jaco's "Bass of Doom" is the standard for tone to me. What about those tapewound jobbies from Fender?

2. Fretboard care. How rapidly will roundwounds wear the boar compared to the flats? Is ther something I could treat the board with to toughen it up?

3. Other mods. I'm a phone guy by profession and used to wiring and putting catastrophies back together. I've done a few pickup swaps before but I don't want to lose the J Bass sound.

I have to say, I feel like I've found a soulmate with fretless bass playing. With a blues/rock guitar player history I love TOUCHING the strings with both hands and the vibration against te fretboard. I love the rumble and power of the low frequencies

Thanks.
