: Hi all, I'd like to have your opinion of a Hofner 500/1 Beatle Bass...Is it a good instrument, or just over-hyped because Paul McCartney used one? I happen to think it's a beautiful instrument, but have never played one. Thanks in advance!

I used to own a vintage '63 Beatles bass. It's a beautiful instrument. I knew nothing about bass when my father bought it for me, but I learned to play bass on it and later realized it had crappy intonation (the bridge isn't fixed and the individual bridge saddles leave little room for adjustment). Other than that, it's okay. The neck is kinda thick, but the short scale makes it easier to play, in my opinion. I sold it for $300 to a dealer who turned around and sold it for $800. Today, I see the same model in stores for over $2500. Just kick me and take me out of the gene pool. I'm currently looking for another, just for my collection.
