: Sorry for such a simple question on a board that is clearly populated with actual musicians....but I was wondering if you all had recommendations on a good instrument/gear for me to start with. Not crazy expensive, but also not something that I'll regret buying as soon as I know anything at all about the instrument.... I couldn't be any more of a beginner, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Alison,
The Fender/Squier, Yamaha, and Ibanez basses are all excellent; one other thing you might think about, though, is looking into a used instrument as your first bass.

Being that the low-end basses are as good as they are, if you can find one used in good condition, you might be able to get a *really* good deal! You might want to have a guitar/bass repairman look at it before you buy, just to make sure that everything is going to work on it.

Hope that helps!

-Bob
