: just kidding, but...
: seriously, we got fretless basses why not fretless GUITARS? how come nobody makes these?
: I know they'd be harder than hell to play, but wouldn't the tone be worth it?
: just curious
Not a bad question at all, and, believe it or not, in the last "Gitarre und Bass magazine" (German), an electrical fretless guitar was reviewed.
The problem is that the scale is much shorter than on a bass, and moreover, our ears are much more sensitive to bad intonation in the frequency range a guitar can produce. Therefore, playing a fretless guitar you must have a VERY precise left hand technique, and even then it is almost impossible to play chords with more then three strings without sounding like a kicked cat. Might be possibly OK for playing soli, but not for chords. I donīt believe that fretless guitars will become the instrument of the new millenium (in contrast to fretless basses, like my wonderful Human Base Jonas, for example)....
Hope this could help you.
