: I'm a beginning bassist looking to buy my first 4str electric bass and combo amp. I'm primarily into heavy metal and would like to get a bass and amp good for these types of tones.
: Any suggestions? I have about $1200 to spend. Is it possible to get a decent bass and amp rig for this amount?
: The local stores I've been to haven't exactly been helpful, so any input would be welcome here.
One thing you should consider is how big a combo you need. My 15" speaker (cab) wasn't enough so I bought a 8x10", which might be a bit too much for you. A 4x10 is great if you play with a band. But if you're going to play at home it's good to get a small combo. Hartke makes really good combos with 10", 12" and 15" speakers. If you haven't got a band coming up in the near future I'd definately recommend a small combo (Hartke Kickback). Later on you could buy an amp/cab combination (Eden or SWR). There will still be use for your small combo though, I've wished I'd have one many times when I've dragged my 160 pound cab around. I've only played a Hartke kickback in a shop but it seemed really good. So I recommend it highly. Although I did play with a really good bass (a Warwick Corvette).
All for now, I hope I've helped
