My R&R band, "TopShelf" (not my idea, that name - I wanted to call us
FFOG - for "Five Fat Old Guys")played a corporate pary at a ritzy
hotel in Metro Atlanta. I blew the dust off of my Alembic Epic 5
string fretless, figuring I'd take it for a spin on one or two of our
ballads. Picked it up for the first tune we were doing for a warm up,
as the partiers hadn't arrived in full force yet. When the tune was
done, the lead singer launched into the next tune, and I ended up
playing the fretless the entire first set! ZZTop, Doobie Brothers,
Gloria Estefan, Ike and Tina Turner... all these different artists'
tunes... done on my fretless. It actually turned out OK - it was
really funny. The drummer knew what was happening and was laughing
his hiney off. He saw me as I kept throwing desperate glances at the
Fender on the stand only 3 feet away, knowing I didn't have enough
time to make the swap. A couple of times he counted off the tunes and
deliberately did not let me get to the Fender. Ha!!!!!!!!!
A great time was had by all.
