Hey Stephen, What's up?

$1200.00 bucks will go a long way for someone starting out. These are just
recomendations of mine of course, but with the $1200.00 you have, I'd suggest
spending a little less on the bass, and a little more on the amp, because for
Rock/Metal you can never have too much power.Ask yourself a few questions,
such as what fusionman said: Is there the real possibility of playing in a band soon? Are there any basses you're curious about? I can recommend any of the
Ibanez, Yamaha or Fender entry level basses, and like I tell everyone: Go to
each manufacturer's site and see what interests you.You say the local music
stores aren't being helpful? That stinks! I live in Queens, N.Y., and growing
up here, if you're into music is a real blessing.Although I've run into a few
nasty clerks, I have to admit I've been lucky.Whenever I go into the Sam Ash
store on Queens Blvd., no one bothers me.It's almost like I'm invisible.I just
pick a bass off the wall and play.If I want to buy something,I have to flag
down a salesman.I'm not trying to get you jealous, but rather offer a unique
service.(free of charge of course)If you let me know here at the forum, or
by e-mail which basses you're interested in, I'll go to Sam Ash and check them
out and give you an honest evaluation of them.Hey why not? Why should't I help
a fellow musician if I can.I'll also probably wind up buying something myself
and get killed by my girlfriend, but what better way to die?

Don't rush out and buy just anything.Go to the following sites and see what
catches your eye, come back, post another question, and we'll all do our best
to help you get the most for your buck! Good luck! The Mickster
