: : I need some suggestions on becoming more disciplined in my bass practice. I tend to pick up the bass and just play what ever comes to mind. I would really appriciate hearing some practice routines have worked for some other bassists out there.

: Hi David,
: Something that worked for me is to start in small time intervals. Practice one
: thing for 15 minutes, take a break, move onto the next thing. The trick is
: to stay focused on one thing for an extended period of time. Make sure you
: spend some time doing warm-ups -- either scales, exercises, etc. I find that
: 15 minutes of doing this clears my head and allows me to concentrate, aside from
: the physical benefits. Also, decide what you are going to work on before you sit
: down to practice, stick to your plan and keep a log of what you practiced and
: how long you spent with it.
: Hope this helps some.
Organised practice is a good idea but just playing what comes to mind is an excellent aproach. Set asside some time in the day for practicing what Josh suggests as it is good for discipline but stick with your originl aproach as well.
