If you've listened to Kill Em All and Master of Puppets, you should have heard why Cliff was great. On Kill Em All, there's the song "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" which is basically just one big bass solo...and on MAster of Puppets, Cliff plays a great solo on the song "Orion." Many of the songs, yes, they were just simple metal. But Cliff also did all the harmonizing of the guitars for Metallica...charted it all out etc. But the biggest reason for him being so lauded can't be heard on the records...it was solely in Metallica's live performances...where he would play amazing bass solos.
: I keep hearing all the hype about the late Cliff Burton but don't understand it
: I've listened to Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets but dont hear anything but typical "metal bassplaying" yeah he uses his fingers but so what? a lot of metal bassiss play fingerstyle
: so fill me in. what is so great about Cliff? is it just because he was killed?
: I dont mean to piss off any Burton or Metallica fans here, I'm being serious in my questions
