: Well even though I hate being the pessimist I should at least give you a heads up. Looks like you have the low down on active pickups but I doubt that you could find a low end 6-string bass and the vast majority of them come with active pickups. There was a comment as well about how they are virtually noise free. I would disagree. They are less noisy but depending on the amp and the pickup itself you will still get some noise. I just don't want you to try a bass, hear some noise and then think its broken. I could be way off on the availability of a low end 6 string so best of luck tracking one down.

Wes, Mickster, Deman, Skippy...

Thanks guys - I knew I could count on you guys for some really valuable help. I've started trying out some 6-stringers....and with the knowledge you guys have shared, I at least feel like I have a handle on things.

It always comes down to getting out and trying stuff out...the key is to decide for myself what I like, what works for me, and which one of these monstrosities (damn those necks are fat!!) I want to try to conquer. But - with your help - I'm off to a good start!!

btw - Skippy and Mickster - you guys also had some helpful thoughs on a Gibson Ripper I was trying to sell - got $560.00 for it on ebay...not bad, huh?

Thanks again,
Rich
