: : I am thinking of buying a Musicman to repalce my Washburn Bantam.
: : What are the differences in terms of sound between Musicman´s Sterling and Stingray basses???

: Yo,
: not many, really. The Sterling's most important innovation (besides being a little smaller than the Stingray) is the intruduction of a "triple coil" pickup. How come? well, the third coil is really a "dummy" coil, which allows the system to run in paralell or series with no further trouble. You should be able to get "single coil" sounds without the hum that way.
: Hope that helped. Buena suerte and keep that bass up front in the mix,

The Sterlng also has a more "Jazz"(Thin & fast) style neck as compared to the Stingray's "Precision"(chunkier) profile. I had a Sterling that played great, but always sounded "back there" compared to any of my other instruments(including a couple Stingrays). I finally commited to replacing the pickup with a Bartolini, and, problem solved! The Bartolini is so well shileded, that single coil hum is negligible, and IMHO, a little hum in a great sounding p/u is preferrable to a "distant" sounding p/u. A couple of years later I was goofing around with a Stingray, and popped the old triple coil p/u in, but had to remove the dummy coil to make it fit. Guess what? Losing the dummy coil restored the "up front quality" the pickup was lacking earlier.

As a general rule, despite" vintage" arguments favoring the old style bridges/thru body stringing, Ernie Ball's Musicman instruments are of incredible build quality & consistency, easily surpassing that of the 70's Musicman maunfacture.

Whichever you chose, you'll find yourself in whole new world compared to the Washburn. Good luck!
