I haven't played a BG-29, but I've found the Epiphone El Capitan to be nice... though it's a five-string. And I haven't seen one with frets, either, so that doesn't help at all.

Acoustic bass guitars are weird... they've been constructed basically just like their skinny-stringed cousin, but because bass deals with different frequencies than guitar, most e/a basses end up sounding really... well, dull. Plus, if they use all the same bracing and whatnot, an a/e bass will almost always be drowned out unamplified in an ensemble situation.

Too bad nobody makes resonator basses anymore...
