Hey, I have built two subwoofers and a bass amp is basically the same thing. The easiest would be to build a speaker cabnit and buy a seperate amp head. A combo would only be hard because i have no idea where you could an internal amplifier made for a bass guitar. I dont know about making the amp from scratch, cuz that would require a lot of knowledge and parts. Here are some sites about speaker building that i used:
http://www.velocity.de/englisch/sou/su_ein.htm
http://www.audioc.com/information/sub_manual.htm#Intro
http://people.we.mediaone.net/chriswillis/boxbuild.htm
http://members.tripod.com/XSSpl/Audio/Sound.htm
http://www.diysubwoofers.org/

Although they are mostly for subwoofers, most of the info should be the same for a bass amp except you dont need as low frequency response, and you would need a speaker made for instrument amps. I know www.i-mcm.com's catalog has some instrument speakers, www.partsexpress.com has a lot of speaker related stuff also. The only problem i can think that you might have is finding a speaker that can handle the power of a bass head because they tend to be powerful and the speakers ive seen tend to be low power. If anyone else knows where you can buy bass amp speakers i would be interested to know, also.

: : I've been thinking about trying to build my own bass amp from scratch, has anyone done this before or know of any web sites about it?
: : I know someone who has built Sub woofer boxes to go in people cars, so he should know a bit about constructing the actual box. Plus I do a bit of electronics at my college. I was wondering should I have a go, or just leave it to the pro's and pay them for it?
: : Ideas will be much appreciated,

: Sorry when i wrote the above i was thinking of a combo amp which I did not state. But now I'm thinking of a separate amp and a speeker cabinate. Cheers.
