great, man, going back to the sources is always a good way to start to understand what's going on today....
Modern funksters? Well, Alain Caron (formerly with UZEB, current solo artist) is not exactly what I'd call a "funk player", but he does have some of the scariest funk/slap chops around. He just terrorizes the pants out of me. Ditto Christian McBride (both on acoustic and electric). And former Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender has some of the greasiest, sexiest, cooler funk feels of bassdoom....
Chord charts for bass? You should be able to find plenty of'em at your local music bookstore.
