I can play with my fingers, but I don't like to. The sound isn't as crisp. It seems that people tell you that you aren't a real bassist unless you play fingerstyle. Well, at the end of the day, is that warm, fat tone what you want? Instead of laying down an invisible, lurking rhythm, wouldn't it be nice to once in a while(or all the time for that matter) let your noise SCREAM through?
Sure, fingers are good, make a nice sound for jazz and such, but they also cause blisters and leave unsightly skin fragments on your strings. While this would look appropriate for some death metal bands, when you play with bones you get the same sound as a pick anyway.
I use a 3mm Jim Dunlop, Big n Stubby. I might go down to a 2mm or a regular Fender Heavy on a bad day, but I'd still rather use a 3. Try playing closer to the bridge, that's get some varying results from your pick too.
