: COULD SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME MORE ABOUT PICKUPS PLEASE? Pickups do just that,pick-up,what,vibrations produced by the strings vibrating somewhere between the nut and bridge. The strings pass through a magnetic feild ,area around the pickup, produced by the pickup which responds to the metal core and windings of the strings. As the string vibrates in this magnetic feild, the pitch of the string,is picked up or amplified by the pickup. From there the signal is processed through a assortment of things like, preamps(active pickups),volume, tone, controls, switches(depending on the bass),then to the output jack.
passive pickups amplify the pitch on there own while active pickups pass the signal on to a preamp, built into the bass for further tone shaping before exiting the bass. Pickups sound different by what type and what there made of.Single coil jbass style sound different than double coil hum cancelling bar type pickups.Try playing basses with different pickups types to hear how they sound. hope this helps.
