I don't have really small hands, but I don't have incredibly large hands, either. I can play comfortably on a longer-scale bass if I really need to, but my main instrument for both recording and performing is a medium (32") scale Fender Urge. Before that, I had an Ibanex EXB440 with the same scale... scale is string length from the nut to the bridge, in case nobody else pointed that out. Anyway, most 4-string basses have a 34" scale, many five and six strings have a 35" scale. Some basses, like the Epiphone Viola (Hofner-style) and a few others have a 30" scale, which is geared towards people who have smaller hands, or people who double on guitar. You can always cope with whatever scale you get... what you get used to is what you get used to. But you'll probably be able to get more comfortable more quickly if you try a short or medium scale bass.
