: Hello, I'd really like to learn the electric bass, but I have small hands and short fingers. Does this have any impact on one's ability on the bass? Or does it all come down to practice and proper technique? I had a salesman tell me that "the best players have huge hands with alien-like finger length" (No kidding) So what's everyone's opinion on this?

: Thanks

jaco had huge hands; but jaco was something mach larger than hand size. unless you're an extreme example of small hands it make no difference at all. look at gary willis, john patitucci, victor wooten just to name a few...all have smaller 9 not large hands anyway) and JP plays upright too...no difference in my opinion...go with a 34'' scale, it sounds best.

just a thought,

mr hands
