: : I've not used Elixir bass strings because of the cost. However, I DID use Elixir strings on my acoustic guitar. Except for the lessened string noise, I didn't really notice the coating much. They sounded great at first, but the kicker was when they still sounded basically new four weeks later. They lasted FOREVER, which I love given my financial situation. But I don't break strings on any of my instruments, no matter how badly I abuse them. That's odd in and of itself.

: : Anyway, Elixirs are roundwounds.

: what do you guys think of blue steel?

are those the ones that are frozen? If those are the ones I'm thinking of, they seemed bright at first then turned rapidly to mud. I only tried them the one time though. I think DR makes a pretty good string. A salesman at guitar center thinks were all nuts though, claims that there are only three types of string in reality. I can't accept that!! I swear I can tell a difference. MAybe it's mass hysteria? -B
