My brother has a '73 P-Bass. He recently took out the old pickups and electronics because the signal was way too weak, and replaced them with an EMG. He had to carve out some of the wood to fit the battery into it. Sounds great, though.

Anyway, I've played one of those Cort P-Copies. Replacing the electronics really depends on whether you're putting in an active or passive pickup. If you're putting a passive pickup in there, you might be able to get away with using the existing electronics, but I'd recommend re-soldering all the old wires in there. If you want to put in an active pickup, it's pretty much a given that you'll have to put in new electronics, and make room for the battery.

I love cheap basses! You can carve 'em, drill 'em, replace pickups... and not get dirty looks from vintage collectors! Tonewoods be damned!
