question about bass combo amps

I play fingerstyle bass in a metal band and we've reached the point where were ready to start playing some gigs. I have a few questions about combo amps.

Are they loud enough for gigs? What type of wattage and number/type of speaker arrangement should I be looking into?

Also, what are some good combos for metal bass (played with fingers)? I've always liked the tone of Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. My bass is a Dean Jeff Berlin Standard; a strange choice for a "metal" bass I know, but this bass is an incredible instrument and feels like butter in my hands. And the tone is awesome.

The reason I'm shooting for a combo is ease of transport. I'd rather carry one amp (even if it weighs a ton) than have to carry a head and separate cab(s). But if a combo won't slake it, then I can buy a stack if necessary.

I'd be grateful for your opinions (and experience!) in this matter.

Thanks a lot,
Mike K
