: Hey Everybody,
: I'm looking to get a couple of pickups for an upright bass: one for my bass, and a new one for my school. Our jazz band currently has to use a cheesy 5 dollar one that makes my solos sound like I'm playing a hugh upright milk-jug. What's the best pickup around, not caring TOO much about price (but within reason for a student musician), and what's the best pickup that could fit a school's budget? Also, what effect can the amp have on the sound? I have a pretty good GK, as does the school.
: Thanks for your help!

Matt,
If memory serves, the old Barcus-Berry bass transducer has pretty much been the standard, but I'm not sure if it's available anymore. Companies like Fishman and L.R. Baggs (who've pretty much replaced Barcus-Berry as the leader in acoustic transducers) have them available, but they tend to be kinda spendy.

You might want to ask over on the acousticbass.com (sister site to electricbass.com) message board, too; they're a *lot* more familiar with the upright bass stuff than we are, so they could probably give you a *lot* more accurate info than I can.

Hope that helps!

-Bob
