May I suggest that wrapping your hand around isn't the best idea.
The "proper" technique is to place your fretting hand's thumb in the middle of the back of the neck somewhere between where your index and middle fingers are.
You are of course free to move that thumb towards the "treble" side of the neck if it helps you reach the "bass" strings as well as shifting out from in between the two fingers to make reaching an extra fret or two easier(see Carol!!)
This way you can play any width neck without problem(even 10 string basses!!).
