: Ok this may sound like a dumb question as I have never actually played a fretless but I am just curious about a few things. Is slap/pop and tapping technique effective on a fretless bass as opposed to a fretted? Would you even want to for that matter for fear of damage to the neck (even with flat wounds)? Love the sound just wondering how versatile the instrument is.
: TIA
A fretless is versatile, but not a tool for everything... slapping and poping can be done on a fretless, but not with the sucess of a fretted instrument... sliding and slithering around and developing that cool "muahhh" sound and tone, takes a diffrent aproach than blindly hitting the note . Thats where a fretted instrument takes the advantage. But with a fretless, , unless you have the fretmarkers' your ears play the bass. have slapped, my Fender J-fretless before, and it really leaves some to be desired. but it doesn't really promote significant damage to the board. regardless of the strings you use.
Good Luck'
