Hi Aaron,
I had this same problem in 95 when I purchased a 5-String Fender Jazz Bass. The
B string sounded like mud compared to the other 4. This year, I walked into a music
store and picked up a PEAVEY Cirrus 5-String and YOWZA what a difference! Traded
in the Jazz for it the next week. Here are the main differences:
FENDER JAZZ BASS PEAVEY CIRRUS
- Bolt-on neck (good sustain) - Neck through body (superb sustain)
- Standard 34" scale (Bridge to nut) - 35" scale (Allows full B vibration)
- Standard machine head placement - machine heads 2" to 3" further from nut

I think the extra inch in scale, and the machine head placement really allows
the B string to articulate more. Go to a music store and check any bass out
that has a 35" scale and you'll really notice the difference.
HAVE FUN!
