Harmonics are bell-like tones generated by effectively dividing a string's vibrations. By far, the easiest harmonic to generate is at the 12th fret. Place a left-hand finger on one of your strings, right over the 12th fret, and lightly touch the string; don't press to the neck. Then pluck the string. You should hear a tone that is the same pitch as the note at the 12th fret, but (for lack of a better term) more "ringing." After you can generate 12th fret harmonics easily, try using the 5th, 7th and 10th frets. You can probably find harmonics at other positions, and it varies between different basses. (With enough distortion, a guitar/bass will generate harmonics at *any* position).

: I've been playing the bass for just over half a year now, but I have no idea what it means when someone says "harmonics." Could someone please explain to me what this means. cheers.
