: Check this out fingerstyle bassers, I have a question for all of you..

: Do you think raking your fingers (when you're crossing strings), coming say, from the G string to the A string is a bad idea?? What if its just plain easier to use just one finger to hit the notes rather than awkwardly alternating???? Thoughts???

: Thanks all

Well I actually think it IS a bad idea. While raking may give you a deceptive feel of easiness when going from one string to the next, I think that feel will quickly disappear when you try complex, challenging lines with a lot of string skipping (like Jaco's "Teentown"). While I'm still working at it, I'd strongly recommend sticking to alternate fingering when crossing strings. Yes, it takes a long time, and, yes, it can become painfully boring, but it is definitely worth it down the line. Not only will you be able to grasp harder bass lines, but you will also gain a lot of consistency in your tone. If you're interested, nex time I'll tell you which exercises I do to improve my alternate fingering.
Buena suerte and keep that bass up front in the mix.
