Jim, you got me, man. I have NO idea what the f**k yer talking about. I mean, you do understand that when Pat and I are talking about a certain style of music being the "center of the universe", we are just talking about music, right? It's not whole life, ya know. We go to movies, shop for groceries, yell at the TV, right? It's just that my musical focus is this music.
I'm not sure where you are getting this idea that playing jazz means not playing in front of people. Even in East Bumf**k GA (where I lived before I moved here) there are at least five clubs that have jazz one night a week, a couple of'em have jazz every night that they have bands. And I do think that people are well served by being able to witness a situation where human beings are trying to communicate on a deep and beautiful level without any input from Madison Ave.
Or that people are willing to devote time and energy on something as intangible as beauty. It can be very healing.

Oh, and if you play HAPPY BIRTHDAYas whole notes, it doesn't sound like HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Ya gotta stick with the rhythms....
